Diary of a Long Weekend

A New Rose Garden for Timaru

2001 A Rose Odyssey!

BOOK REVIEW

“FIND THAT ROSE in New Zealand”

by Dawn Eagle 2000

As the Editor of ‘Find That Rose’,Dawn Eagle takes considerable care in its preparation in an effort to make the information as accurate as possible.  This booklet has been produced for a number of years now and rosarians across the country refer to it whenever they are searching for a particular rose for themselves or someone else.

The roses are in alphabetical order with the classification key, breeders code name and when introduced, if this information is known.  Cross-referencing is included making the task of identifying the nursery much easier.  I consider this booklet a must for every DRS library.  Furthermore as a large number of details change, it is important to keep up to date with the latest.

Copies can be had directly from Dawn Eagle, Southern Cross Nurseries, 566 Trents Rd, Prebbleton, Christchurch.  Costs are $8.00 paid with the order or $10.00 invoiced.

DIARY OF A LONG WEEKEND

  By A Late Bloomer

Thursday

The skies have finally cleared; Jim and Augie reckon the fine weather will stay around all weekend. I might take Friday off – get the rose beds weeded and fed, now that the pruning’s finished.

Friday

6.30     Hubby brings in a cuppa. Decide to lie in a few minutes seeing as I might take the day off.

8.00     I return cold cup of tea to kitchen and phone work. “I’m taking the day off, something’s come up”. Yes the suns come up, its gardening time.  Put some washing in the machine, have a leisurely read of the paper over breakfast. It’s 9.30 already. Check the lime and blood and bone. Not much left. Head into town to the bulk supplier. Load the boot up with two 40 kg bags, one each of dolomite and blood and bone. That should keep us going for a while. Call in at a garden centre on the way home. Get some gladioli bulbs and a few perennials. Should have plenty of time to plant all that this weekend.

12.15   Get home. Better have a bite of lunch before I get out there. Not much in the pantry, it must be the end of the week. Pop down to the supermarket and get some soup. Get home, phone goes, friend wondering if I knew there is some good rose specials in a sale at a garden centre. Where would I put new roses? I’d better go and check it out anyway.

2.45     Get home, with new bush of Kaikoura. Looks pretty good. Should get some good blooms on that, might try and beat those Northland folks with that. Have a cuppa before I get out there. Where’s the day gone. Still - two more days yet.

3.30            Wander down to the bottom of the garden; eventually locate the wheelbarrow along with the hoe and fork. Time to get stuck in.

3.40     Realise I’ve forgotten to lock the front door. I don’t like being down the garden and leave the front door unlocked. May as well get the washing in while I’m up here, before I get my hands dirty.

4.30     Hubby gets home from work, makes a cup of tea. I’ve weeded half a bed. All he can say is “You haven’t done much”.

5.00     I manage to get out there again for a short while. My teenage son wants some money and a ride into town. Can I please take him? Looks like I may as well flag the gardening. Try again tomorrow.

Saturday

7.15            Another cold cup of tea is returned to the kitchen. Why don’t I ever get a hot one? Lots of washing to do today, plus I have to get the groceries too. Get a couple of loads out then go off to the supermarket.

10.45   Seem to be a bit late out of the supermarket this week. I kept on running into people I know. I had to put the groceries on the back seat, as I’d forgotten to get one of the boys to get those 40 kg bags out of the boot.

11.30   Got the last of the washing out and the groceries away. Blast, forgot to buy Lotto. Head back into town, get a ticket and a scratch card. Won $2! Buy another 2 tickets, nothing on them. Silly game.

1.30     Finally get outside after taking too long for lunch. It’s fairly cold, and has started to get a bit cloudy, hope the weather holds for the whole weekend.

2.15     Nearly finished that 1st bed I started yesterday. Phone goes. Friend asking us if we’d like to come round and watch the rugby on Sky.

4.45     Get home. Not a good game. We lost. It’s very cold. Have a cuppa. Get the washing in. May as well start getting the dinner on.

Sunday

8.00            Managed to drink my cuppa today while it was still warm, but then I dozed off again.

9.00     I’d better iron a couple of blouses for work before I wreck my hands gardening. Put another load of washing out. Lots of high cloud about.

10.15   Get outside. I finish that 1st bed, and completely do another. This is more like it.

12.45   Go in for a quick lunch.

1.45     Spent too long at lunch. Started reading the Sunday papers over a sandwich. Time to get out there again.

2.30     Doing well in that 3rd bed. There are a few spits of rain about. Go in and wash my hands quickly, then get the washing in. Get straight back out there. I won’t let a few spits of rain put me off.

4.45     Steady rain. Its cold too, and I’m dripping wet. Don’t seem to have done much. May as well call it a day, better have a shower and warm up.

The following Saturday……..

9.00     Get the washing out then I’m off to the supermarket again. Weather doesn’t look too bad. I’ve had a cold all week. Go to put the groceries in the car, but the boot is still full of 2 big bags, and a couple of shrivelled up looking plants.

11.00   I’m about to get outside, when the phone goes. Somebody wants a Consulting Rosarian to come and see what’s wrong with his or her roses.

OH HECK, here we go again!

AN EXCITING NEW ROSE GARDEN FOR TIMARU

A new rose garden is well on its way into being in Caroline Bay Timaru.  This garden will commemorate the work of our well-known local rose grower, collector of old roses and author of a number of books on roses Trevor Griffiths.  Over the years he has also introduced many of the roses bred by David Austin, which do so well in this district

The new garden is being organized by the local Beautifying Society under the leadership of Nan Raymond, wife of the Mayor of Timaru District Council, who is herself a knowledgeable gardener and rose lover.  It has been designed by Sir Miles Warren, the eminent architect whose own garden at Ohietahi by Lyttelton Harbour is a Mecca for garden lovers.

South Canterbury Rose Society has recently run a fund raising event, a monster raffle, organized by our Treasurer Rosalene Davidson who found donors for the many prizes.  We raised enough to pay for two rose beds and look forward to seeing what roses will be planted in them.  Many other horticultural and social groups as well as individuals have contributed and the donors names are to be placed on plaques in the garden.

The garden is said to be in the shape of a fish will be seen to great advantage from above, looking down from the new Piazza where a lift is available as well as steps to go down to the garden level.  Here there are to be vertical structures ,trees, hedges, walks and eventually a gazebo.

We hope that many of you will take advantage of visiting our new garden when complete.  It is quite close to the main highway through Timaru, using the signposted road to the Piazza at the top of the Bay Hill, or by driving down to Caroline Bay.

The Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden will be a great and deserved tribute to a man who has spent forty years growing, collecting and writing about roses.

"2001 - A Rose Odyssey"

The 2001 National Autumn Rose Show and Convention is to be hosted by the Otago Rose Society in Dunedin on 16th to 18th March 2001.  We invite you to join us.

'Wobblys' at Forbury Park Raceway is the venue where all functions will be held.  The Show will be staged at ground level while all social functions will be held upstairs, with easy access.  There is ample parking available.  Floral displays by local groups will greet you on arrival.

Our patron, Mayor Sukhi Turner, is to open the Convention on Friday when we have an informal get together with finger food being served and a cash bar available.

For people who are not busy on Saturday morning there will be a trip out to the Taieri to visit places of interest.  Return in time to join with others for lunch before the Show opens at 1.00pm. During the afternoon there will be a Judging and Consulting Rosarians Debriefing Seminar for all interested to attend.  Alternatively, you may wish to take a casual stroll along our lovely beaches (just across the road).   A busy day will conclude with roll call and prize giving dinner with light entertainment to sit back, relax and enjoy.  Sunday's trip promises to be a memorable one returning at the end of the Show and finishing with a BBQ to close the weekend.

Our two-day post-convention tour leaves on Monday for North Otago.  Places of interest, including the famous Moeraki Boulders will be visited on the way to Oamaru where members of the North Otago Rose Society will greet you.  Tuesday will head off inland to Danseys Pass and down into the Maniototo for more visits before heading back to Dunedin via Middlemarch.  A detour can be made to Dunedin Airport for evening flights if required.  Dunedin has much to offer for visitors wishing to stay longer.

Accommodation is available at motels within walking distance of Forbury Park, along with the Shoreline Hotel that provides a courtesy coach.  Alternatively, if you have transport, Aaron Lodge Motel and Holiday Park offers a wide range of accommodation in a beautiful setting.

Do not hesitate to contact Convention Convener Ann Williams, phone (03) 4896641 or at 17 Lorne Street, Mosgiel if you have any enquiries.
